Dive headfirst

The Awareness Alphabet.png

This is an ongoing series that offers 26 ways for you to be aware of the things you need to do in order to make change. This is the fourth post in the series. Catch up on the previous posts.

My grandmother taught me to dive when I was probably 4 or 5. We would go to the town pool every day and she would instruct me, and eventually my little brother, on how to dive. We were fishes who definitely took naturally to water but diving is not something anyone enters into lightly. Even a child can see the danger of putting your head before your body and plunging into the unknown.

But she was such a patient teacher, showing us first how to just fall in. Then using the knee bend. Then trying to get some spring from our legs and eventually tackling the diving board. Back when I was capable of bending any which way (god, I miss those days), I could even do a backwards dive. To this day, whenever I dive I think of her and it always brings a smile to my face. And I never have any fear about it.

Now it took years, obviously, to become comfortable doing that but in life we don’t always have the luxury of taking our time. Sometimes we allow ourselves to be paralyzed by fear and end up doing nothing. So how can you learn to just dive headfirst and do the very thing you’ve been putting off? Or do the very thing that’s been scaring you?

It would be really cliché of me to say ‘just do it.’ Right? I mean ‘fuck you, Danielle. If only I’d thought of that?’ And while it isn’t that simple, it kind of is. Because the more you analyze all your reasons for not tackling whatever you need to tackle, the more you’ll talk yourself out of it. Your mind is a powerful asshole and it will hold you back if you let it. But you need to be the motherfucking boss here. Tell your mind who’s in control and just decide to take the plunge.

If you need to lose weight, don’t wait until Monday. Make a change right now. You don’t need to ease into it. Rip off the fucking Band-aid and commit. Head to the store and buy healthy food. Download My Fitness Pal and start tracking your meals. Go for a walk tonight or stop reading this post and go now. Tell friends and family immediately that you’re starting your fitness journey. Don’t let your mind hold you back from your potential. Do it now. You have that power. You deserve this now.

If you want to start a new business but are overwhelmed with where to start or with all the information out there (believe me, I hear you on this one!) make a list of three things you need to do this week and then do it. And then next week, do three more. These could be as simple as register your domain name, call some designers or writers for your materials and get a Tax ID number. Don’t make it major. Start small. But just start!

Have you been wanting to ask someone out, but you’ve convinced yourself of all the negative scenarios that might happen? Well, what about thinking of all the good scenarios that might happen instead? What if they say yes? What if you go out and have an amazing time? What if you end up dating or married? Focus on the good what if’s and just go ahead and ask.

And before you back pedal and say it’s not that easy. Yes, it fucking is. You can make it easy but you choose to make it hard. Change your mind. Change your mantra and believe that yes, you can do it. You can do whatever you want. This isn’t some feel-good hippie shit; this is how things work. If you believe it, you can do it. End. Of. Story.
